加拿大租房合同说“provide”,我还以为房东在预测未来……

刚到加拿大租房时,我和房东一起检查租约。
他翻到其中一页,指着一行说:
“The lease provides that tenants must give 30 days’ notice.”
“租约里规定,租客必须提前30天通知。”
我听到 provides,脑子却突然拐到了 predict。
我盯着合同问:
“How can the lease predict that?”
“这份合同怎么能预测这件事?”
房东愣了一下。
“Predict what?”
“预测什么?”
我认真解释:
“You said the lease provides that tenants will give 30 days’ notice.”
“你不是说合同预测租客会提前30天通知吗?”
房东看了我两秒,突然笑了。
“No, no. ‘Provides that’ means ‘states’ or ‘specifies’ here.”
“不是,这里的 provide 是‘规定、写明’的意思。”
那一刻我才反应过来。
我以前背 provide,脑子里只有一个意思:
provide food
提供食物
provide information
提供信息
所以看到 “The contract provides that...” 时,我完全没想到它还能表示:
“合同规定……”
更社死的是,房东接着问:
“Do you mean ‘predict’?”
“你是不是把它和 predict 搞混了?”
我只能点头。
他笑着说:
“If my lease could predict the future, I’d charge more rent.”
“如果我的租约真能预测未来,我房租就该收贵一点了。”
我当场笑出声。
后来才发现,这种用法在加拿大合同、公司政策、学校规定里特别常见:
“The policy provides that employees must…”
公司政策规定员工必须……
“The agreement provides for annual reviews.”
协议规定每年进行审核。
从那以后我看到 provide,再也不敢只翻译成“提供”了。
