加拿大办公室同事说我“拿错了棍子那一头”,我低头看了半天手里什么都没有……

周一早上开会,经理突然问我:
“Why did you cancel Friday’s meeting?”
“你为什么把周五的会议取消了?”
我一下愣住了。
“Because Sarah told me the client wasn’t coming.”
“因为Sarah跟我说客户不来了啊。”
Sarah立刻抬头:
“No, I said the client wasn’t coming in person.”
“不是,我说的是客户不会到现场。”
“They’re joining online.”
“他们会线上参加。”
会议室突然安静了两秒。
我脑子里飞快回放上周的对话,感觉脸已经开始发热。
旁边同事看我一脸懵,笑着说:
“I think you got the wrong end of the stick.”
“我觉得你拿错棍子的那一头了。”
我当场更懵。
Wrong end of the stick?
错误的……棍子一端?
我下意识看了看桌子下面。
心想:刚才谁拿棍子了?
同事看到我的表情直接笑出声:
“No stick. It just means you misunderstood the situation.”
“没有棍子,就是说你把情况完全理解错了。”
这下我才反应过来。
原来Sarah说的是:
“The client won’t be coming in.”
我自动脑补成了:
“The client won’t be attending.”
一个是“不来现场”,
一个是“不参加”。
就差这么一点,我把整个会议都取消了。
最后只能赶紧重新发邀请:
“Sorry, I got the wrong end of the stick.”
“不好意思,是我把情况理解错了。”
经理倒没生气,还笑着说:
“Well, at least we still have four days to fix it.”
“还好,我们还有四天补救。”
那天之后我彻底记住了:

不是“拿错棍子的一头”,
而是“完全误解了别人的意思,把情况搞反了”。
现在想想,最尴尬的不是听不懂英语,
而是你明明每个单词都听懂了,却理解成了另一个故事。
