搬到加拿大后,我一直想在后院放一套桌椅。

周末去Costco,看中一套户外桌,价格不便宜,我正犹豫冬天会不会冻裂。

旁边的加拿大同事Mike拍了拍桌子:

“Don’t worry. This thing can withstand a Canadian winter.”
“别担心,这东西能 withstand 加拿大的冬天。”

我听到withstand,脑子突然卡了一下。

with + stand?

“用……站?”

不知道为什么,我瞬间脑补出一张桌子在暴风雪里倒立,用“四只手”撑着地面硬扛加拿大寒冬。

我还很认真地问:

“What do you mean? It has to stand in a special way?”
“什么意思?它需要用什么特殊姿势站着吗?”

Mike盯着我两秒。

“What special way?”
“什么特殊姿势?”

我一边比划,一边说:

“You said ‘with-stand’…”
“你不是说with-stand吗……”

他终于反应过来,直接笑了:

“No, no. Withstand means it can survive or resist something.”
“不是。Withstand就是经受住、抵抗住某种东西。”

原来他说的是:

This table can withstand snow, wind and freezing temperatures.
这张桌子能经受住大雪、强风和严寒。

后来我才发现,这个词生活里还挺常见。

“This phone can withstand drops.”
这手机比较抗摔。

“She couldn’t withstand the pressure.”
她承受不住那个压力。

“The roof can withstand strong winds.”
这个屋顶能抵抗强风。

最尴尬的是,结账的时候Mike还问我:

“So, are you buying the hand-standing table?”
“所以,你要买那张‘用手站着的桌子’吗?”

我:……

从那以后,我再看到withstand,脑子里还是会闪过那张在加拿大暴雪里倒立的桌子。
