加拿大办公室同事说他“under the thumb”,我默默看了一眼他的大拇指……
午休时,几个加拿大同事正在讨论周五下班去喝一杯。
Mike突然摇头:
“I can’t. My wife already made plans.”
“我去不了,我老婆已经安排好了。”
旁边的Jason笑了一句:
“Man, you’re totally under the thumb of your wife.”
“兄弟,你完全 under the thumb of 你老婆啊。”
我听完,下意识看向Mike的手。
under the thumb?
在大拇指下面?
我脑子里瞬间出现一个画面:
Mike的大拇指是不是受伤了,老婆还管着他的手?
为了表示关心,我还认真问:
“What happened to your thumb?”
“你大拇指怎么了?”
桌上安静了两秒。
Mike看看自己的手:
“My thumb?”
“我的大拇指?”
Jason直接笑喷:
“No, no! It means she controls him.”
“不是!意思是他被老婆管得死死的。”
我:“……Oh.”
最尴尬的是,下午快下班时,我手机响了。
老婆发消息:
“Don’t forget Costco. We need milk, eggs and toilet paper.”
“别忘了去Costco,买牛奶、鸡蛋和卫生纸。”
我立刻开始收电脑。
Jason在旁边幽幽地问:
“No Friday drinks?”
“周五不喝一杯了?”
我说:
“No. Costco.”
“不去了,Costco。”
他看了看我,慢悠悠地说:
“Looks like you’re under the thumb too.”
“看来你也一样啊。”
这次全办公室都笑了。
我终于记住了。
under the thumb of someone不是“在某人的大拇指下面”,而是说一个人被另一个人控制、管得很严。
比如:
“He’s under the thumb of his boss.”
他处处受老板控制。
不过这个说法多少带点调侃甚至负面意味,真对着别人伴侣说,最好先确认大家关系够熟。
现在问题来了:收到对象的Costco购物清单就立刻取消聚会,这到底算不算“under the thumb”?😂
