加拿大餐馆老板说“under the table”,我真的低头看了桌子底下……

刚来加拿大留学时,我在一家小餐馆找兼职。
面试快结束,老板看了看我的课表,说:
“I might be able to give you a few extra hours under the table.”
“我也许可以私下再给你几个小时。”
我只听懂了extra hours。
至于under the table,我脑子里自动翻译成:
“桌子底下。”
我低头看了一眼面试桌。
老板愣了:
“What are you looking for?”
“你在找什么?”
我很认真地问:
“Do I need to work… under this table?”
“我要在这张桌子下面工作吗?”
旁边正在擦杯子的员工直接笑喷了。
老板赶紧摆手:
“No, no. I mean getting paid cash without putting it on the books.”
“不不,我是说直接付现金,不走正式工资记录。”
这下轮到我不敢笑了。
原来under the table在北美生活里,经常不是“桌子底下”,而是“秘密进行、不公开记录”,特别常见于工资、交易、付款。
比如:
“He was paid under the table.”
不是“他在桌子下面领工资”,而是“他拿了没有正式申报的现金工资”。
更尴尬的是,老板后来又补了一句:
“Actually, forget I said that.”
“算了,当我没说。”
我立刻点头。
那天我虽然没拿到那几个extra hours,却彻底记住了under the table。
现在想想,学英语最可怕的不是没听懂,而是每个单词都听懂了,然后脑补出了完全错误的画面……
