刚来加拿大那年,我陪同事Jason去看一套出租公寓。

房子不错,价格也还能接受,但门口已经站了七八组人。
我小声问:“这么多人,我们还有机会吗?”

Jason看了一眼队伍:
“We’ll have to fight tooth and nail for this place.”
“想拿下这套房,我们得tooth and nail地拼。”

我脑子里瞬间只剩两个词:
tooth=牙齿,nail=钉子。

我看了看Jason,又看了看门口修栏杆留下的工具箱。
“Wait… do we need the nails?”
“等等……我们要用那些钉子吗?”

Jason愣住了:“What?”

我压低声音:
“You said tooth and nail. Teeth I have, but I didn’t bring any nails.”
“你说牙齿和钉子啊。牙我有,但我没带钉子。”

旁边一个加拿大女生直接笑出了声。
Jason捂着脸:“Please don’t bite anybody.”

轮到我们时,房东说已经收到十几份申请。
Jason马上递上工作证明、推荐信,还主动提出当天交押金。

回到车上,他说:
“That’s what I mean by fighting tooth and nail.”
“这才是我说的tooth and nail。”

我这才明白,fight tooth and nail根本不是拿着牙齿和钉子去“打仗”。
它表示为了某件事拼尽全力、激烈争取,中文很像“拼了命也要争下来”。

比如:
“She fought tooth and nail for the promotion.”
她为了升职拼尽了全力。

第二天,Jason发消息说房东选了我们。
我激动回复:“We won!”

他马上回:
“Yes. And nobody got bitten.”

现在每次看到加拿大热门出租房,我脑子里还是会自动出现一个人左手锤子、右手捂着牙冲进去抢房的画面……

你们刚听到tooth and nail时,脑补的是“牙齿和钉子”,还是“牙齿和指甲”?
