加拿大公寓漏水,房东说“hit the roof”,我真抬头检查屋顶了

刚来加拿大租公寓那年,有天晚上楼上漏水。
天花板“滴答滴答”,我拿着盆满屋接水,赶紧给物业打电话。
维修工到家后看了一圈,说楼上住户忘关水龙头了。
第二天,我在电梯里碰到房东。
他一脸无奈地说:
“The landlord upstairs is going to hit the roof when he sees the repair bill.”
“楼上的房东看到维修账单,估计要 hit the roof 了。”
我当时只听懂了三个词:
hit,打。
roof,屋顶。
repair bill,维修费。
我脑子里瞬间出现一个画面:
一个愤怒的加拿大大叔拿着锤子,冲到屋顶上疯狂敲。
我忍不住问:
“Why would he hit the roof? Is the roof damaged too?”
“他为什么要打屋顶?屋顶也坏了吗?”
房东愣了两秒。
旁边维修工直接笑出了声。
“No, no. ‘Hit the roof’ means he’ll be extremely angry.”
“不不不,hit the roof 是说他会气炸了。”
我:“Oh……”
那一刻,我突然理解了什么叫英语听懂了每个单词,但一句话完全没听懂。
更尴尬的是,当天下午楼上的房东真的来了。
他看到几千刀的维修报价,站在走廊里大喊:
“How did this happen?!”
我站在门口默默抬头看了一眼天花板。
维修工看见我的动作,笑着说:
“Don’t worry. He’s not actually going to hit it.”
hit the roof 不是“打屋顶”。
而是气得火冒三丈、大发雷霆。
比如:
“My boss hit the roof when he found out.”
老板知道以后大发雷霆。
“The landlord will hit the roof if we damage the floor.”
要是我们把地板弄坏,房东肯定气炸。
后来我发现,这种表达最难的地方不是单词,而是你脑子里的“中文电影”放得太快。
