加拿大办公室里,同事说“give him the benefit of the doubt”,我还以为要给他一点“怀疑的好处”

刚到加拿大工作那阵,有次同事迟到了快半小时。
经理看了一眼时间,说:
“Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.”
“我们先give him the benefit of the doubt吧。”
我当场听懵了。
benefit是“好处”,doubt是“怀疑”。
连起来不就是——“给他一点怀疑的好处”?
我脑子里甚至开始分析:
难道加拿大职场鼓励合理怀疑?
怀疑别人还能有福利?
过了一会儿,那位同事急匆匆跑进办公室。
“Sorry, my car wouldn’t start this morning.”
“抱歉,我今天早上车打不着了。”
我很认真地问经理:
“So… what benefit does he get from the doubt?”
“所以……这个怀疑到底给他什么好处?”
旁边正在喝咖啡的同事差点呛到。
经理愣了两秒才笑:
“No, it means we’ll believe his explanation unless we have a reason not to.”
“不是,是说在没有证据证明他有问题之前,我们先选择相信他。”
我这才反应过来。
give someone the benefit of the doubt,
不是“把怀疑的好处给某人”,
而是“虽然我还有一点怀疑,但暂时选择相信你,不追究”。
结果更尴尬的是,下午那位迟到的同事主动拿着修车单回来。
“See? I wasn’t making it up.”
“看吧,我真没编理由。”
经理笑着看了我一眼:
“Now you don’t even need to give him the benefit of the doubt.”
这一次我终于听懂了。
后来我才发现,这句话在加拿大特别常见。
同事没及时回邮件、朋友临时取消约会、孩子解释为什么作业没交,很多时候大家都会先“give them the benefit of the doubt”。
中文最接近的感觉,大概就是:
“先姑且相信他吧。”
不过如果同一个人连续三次都说“车坏了”,这种情况下你们还会继续give him the benefit of the doubt吗?
