加拿大看房时中介说超市“a stone's throw away”,我真的开始找石头……

刚来加拿大时,我去看一套公寓。
看完房我最关心的不是采光,而是买菜方不方便。
我问中介:“Is there a grocery store nearby?”
“附近有超市吗?”
他指着窗外说:
“Oh yeah, it’s just a stone’s throw away.”
“当然,就 a stone’s throw away。”
我脑子瞬间卡住。
stone’s throw?
石头的投掷?
我走到窗边认真往楼下看,还想着:加拿大人介绍距离,都这么野的吗?
我指着停车场问:
“Like… if I throw a stone from here?”
“比如……我从这里扔块石头?”
中介愣了两秒:
“Well… please don’t actually throw one.”
“呃……你可千万别真扔。”
旁边陪我看房的朋友已经笑到扶墙。
他把我拉到另一个窗户前:
“He means it’s really close.”
“他的意思就是特别近。”
然后我一抬头——
超市就在马路对面。
走过去可能两分钟。
那一刻我终于明白,a stone’s throw away/from somewhere,不是真的让你计算石头能扔多远,而是说“近得不得了”“一步之遥”。
比如:
“The coffee shop is a stone’s throw from my office.”
咖啡店离我办公室特别近。
后来每次听到 stone’s throw,我脑子里还是会自动出现一个人站在阳台上,举着石头认真测距……
