刚来加拿大那年,我去二手车行看车。

一辆二手SUV标价$18,900,我正犹豫,旁边加拿大朋友看了一眼价格牌:“Wow, that’s a pretty stiff price.”
“哇,这价格挺stiff的。”

我脑子瞬间自动翻译:
stiff=僵硬的。
所以stiff price=价格很硬,不能动,不能砍。

销售走过来问:“What do you think?”
我特别懂行地点头:“The price is stiff. I understand.”
价格很硬,我懂。

销售愣了一下:“Sorry?”
我还补充:“No worries. I won’t negotiate.”
没事,我不讲价。

朋友在旁边差点把咖啡喷出来。

他把我拉到一边:“Wait, why wouldn’t you negotiate?”
等等,你为什么不砍价?

我小声说:“You said the price is stiff.”
不是你说价格很硬吗?

他憋着笑:“I meant it’s expensive!”
我的意思是它贵!

我:“……”

更社死的是,销售后来主动说:
“There’s actually some room on the price.”
其实价格还有商量空间。

那一刻我才明白,stiff price不是“僵硬、固定的价格”,而是“很高的价格、价格不便宜”。

它更接近:
“That’s a stiff price for a used car.”
一辆二手车卖这个价,够贵的。

真要表达“价格很死,不能谈”,通常会说:
“The price is firm.”
价格不议。

最后朋友看着我笑:“You almost paid a stiff price because you misunderstood ‘stiff price.’”
你差点因为误会stiff price,真的付了个高价。

现在想想,中式英语最可怕的不是听不懂,而是你觉得自己完全听懂了。
