加拿大办公室聚餐,同事说“I spilled the wine”,我赶紧去找纸巾……

上周公司项目结束,老板请大家去餐厅吃饭。
刚坐下,同事Mark一脸痛苦地说:
“I totally spilled the wine on that presentation.”
“我那个presentation真的spill the wine了。”
我低头看桌子。
酒杯好好的,桌布也干干净净。
我还特认真地问:
“Where did you spill it?”
“你洒哪儿了?”
Mark愣了一下:“Spill what?”
“洒什么?”
我指着他的红酒:
“The wine. You said you spilled the wine.”
“酒啊,你刚才不是说你把酒洒了吗?”
整桌突然安静两秒。
然后旁边同事直接笑喷了。
Mark赶紧摆手:
“No, no. I mean I messed up the presentation.”
“不是,我是说presentation被我搞砸了。”
我这才明白,他刚才只是临时拿“spill the wine”开玩笑,并不是一个真正的固定表达。
更尴尬的是,我还追问了一句:
“So Canadians actually say ‘spill the wine’?”
“所以加拿大人真的会这么说?”
Mark笑得更厉害了:
“No. I think I just invented it.”
“不,我觉得这是我刚发明的。”
旁边同事补刀:
“If you spill the wine, you spill the wine.”
“你要是真spill the wine,那就是——酒洒了。”
后来我查了一下才发现,英语里真正常说“把事情搞砸”,一般会说:
“I messed it up.”
“I screwed it up.”
“I dropped the ball.”
而spill the wine,大多数时候真的只是“把酒洒了”。
我最佩服的不是自己听错英语,而是我当时居然已经准备起身帮他找纸巾了……
