加拿大公司聚餐,同事问我带不带“significant other”,我以为还要带个重要人物

公司年底聚餐前,行政同事在群里统计人数。
她走到我桌边问:
“Are you bringing your significant other?”
“你会带你的 significant other 来吗?”
我愣了两秒。
significant 是“重要的”,other 是“其他人”。
那 significant other……不就是“一个很重要的其他人”?
我脑子里立刻开始筛选:
老板?关系特别好的同事?加拿大这边的紧急联系人?
为了显得自己听懂了,我还很认真地回答:
“I’m not sure. Do they have to work with us?”
“我不确定,他必须是我们公司的人吗?”
她直接愣住。
旁边同事抬头看了我一眼,憋着笑问:
“Wait… what do you think ‘significant other’ means?”
“等等……你觉得 significant other 是什么意思?”
我还一本正经解释:
“Someone important to me, right?”
“就是一个对我来说很重要的人,对吧?”
全桌瞬间笑了。
行政同事赶紧说:
“No, I mean your partner. Your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife…”
“不是,我是说你的伴侣,男朋友、女朋友、丈夫、妻子之类的。”
我当场懂了。
原来北美生活里,significant other 是一种很常见、也比较中性的说法,意思就是“伴侣、另一半”。
它不特指结婚对象,也不一定强调 boyfriend 或 girlfriend,所以填活动报名表、公司聚餐、医院资料时都可能看到。
最尴尬的是,我之前还在报名表上看到过:
“Name of significant other”
当时我差点填了我妈。
现在想想,要是真填上去,公司聚餐那天估计更精彩……
