加拿大同事说“shoulder the burden”,我下意识看了看他的肩膀……

周一早上办公室开会,经理说最近项目赶进度,大家任务都堆在一起。
同事Mike看了看我,说:
“I can shoulder the burden for this part.”
“这一部分我可以shoulder the burden。”
我听到shoulder,脑子里第一反应就是“肩膀”。
再看看他桌边那一摞文件,我瞬间脑补成:他要把这些东西扛走?
我还很认真地问:
“Do you need a box?”
“你需要个箱子吗?”
Mike愣了一下:
“A box? For what?”
“箱子?干什么?”
我指了指文件:
“You said you would shoulder the burden.”
“你不是说要用肩膀扛这个负担吗?”
会议桌安静了两秒。
旁边同事直接笑出声:
“He doesn’t mean literally carrying it on his shoulder.”
“他不是说真的用肩膀扛。”
我这才反应过来。
这里的shoulder已经不是真的“肩膀”了。
shoulder the burden就是“承担重担、扛起责任”。
比如项目出了问题,有人主动说:
“I’ll shoulder the burden.”
更接近“这事我来扛”。
我正尴尬,Mike却顺手抱起桌上那一大摞文件,往肩膀上一放:
“Actually… now I’m literally shouldering the burden.”
全屋又笑了。
从那以后我一看到shoulder the burden,脑子里还是会出现Mike扛文件的画面。
但好处是,这个表达估计再也忘不掉了。
