周末我陪加拿大同事Mike去Costco退一台咖啡机。

前几天他买的时候,还一直嫌我太谨慎。

我问了三遍:“Are you sure this model is good?”
你确定这个型号好吗?

他一脸自信:
“Relax. I know what I’m doing.”
放心,我知道自己在干什么。

结果用了两天,咖啡机开始漏水。

到了退货柜台,工作人员问了一堆问题,Mike突然变得特别认真:

“Do we still have the receipt?”
小票还在吗?

“Did we keep the box?”
盒子留了吗?

“Are all the parts inside?”
零件都在吗?

我在旁边越听越想笑。

因为买的时候,我问这些问题,他还说我“worry too much”。

我就忍不住说:
“You’re asking a lot of questions now.”
你现在问题倒挺多啊。

Mike苦笑了一下:

“Yeah, now the shoe is on the other foot.”

我愣了两秒,低头看了一眼他的鞋。

左脚一只灰色运动鞋,右脚也是灰色运动鞋。

我还很认真地问:

“What? Did you put your shoes on the wrong feet?”
怎么了?你鞋穿反了?

旁边排队的大叔直接笑出了声。

Mike看着我:
“No! I mean now I’m the one worrying.”
不是!我是说现在轮到我担心了。

我这才反应过来。

the shoe is on the other foot,不是真的“鞋跑到另一只脚上”。

而是原来你站在这个位置,现在轮到别人站在这个位置。

局势反过来了,角色互换了。

以前是我担心,他嫌我啰嗦。

现在东西坏了,轮到他疯狂确认小票、包装和零件。

最尴尬的是,我那天真的低头检查了他的左右脚。

所以现在我一看到这句话,脑子里不是语法,而是Costco退货队伍里那双完全没穿反的灰色运动鞋。

你们第一次听到“the shoe is on the other foot”,会不会也真的想到鞋?
