上周在加拿大办公室,我有份报告周五下午5点截止。

我拖到4:40还在改,同事Mike路过,看了一眼时间:
“You’re sailing pretty close to the wind.”
“你这可是在sail close to the wind啊。”

我听完愣了两秒。

sail=航行,wind=风。
脑子里瞬间出现一艘帆船,船帆贴着风呼呼往前冲。

我还以为他在夸我:
“Yeah, I work better under pressure.”
“对,我压力越大效率越高。”

说完我甚至顺手打开天气App:
“But it’s not very windy today.”
“不过今天风也不大啊。”

Mike盯着我的手机:“What?”

我指着外面:
“You said I’m sailing close to the wind.”
“你不是说我贴着风航行吗?”

他当场笑出声:
“No, man. I mean you’re cutting it really close.”
“不是!我是说你这事干得太悬了。”

我这才知道,sail close to the wind根本不是教你怎么开帆船。

它说的是:做事情非常接近规则、底线或危险边缘,有点“打擦边球”“玩得太险”的感觉。

比如老板发现你连续三次都在截止前一分钟交东西,可能会说:
“You’re sailing close to the wind with these deadlines.”
“你每次都卡着最后一刻,玩得有点险啊。”

最尴尬的是,4:58我终于点了Submit。

Mike看了眼时间:
“See? That’s exactly what I meant.”
“看吧,我说的就是这个。”

那一刻我才发现,真正的“风”不是窗外的风,是deadline在我耳边呼呼地吹……
