加拿大租房看房,中介说“run of the mill”,我开始找附近的工厂……

周末去看加拿大的一套公寓,我对采光、停车位都挺满意,就是觉得房租有点贵。
我问中介:“Is this considered a pretty good unit around here?”
“这套在附近算不错的吗?”
她耸耸肩:“Honestly, it’s pretty run of the mill for this area.”
“说实话,在这个区域挺run of the mill的。”
我脑子瞬间卡住。
run是运转,mill是工厂、磨坊。
难道她说这房子跟附近工厂的运转有关?
我赶紧往窗外看,还认真问了一句:
“Is there a mill nearby? Will it be noisy?”
“附近有工厂吗?会不会很吵?”
中介愣了两秒:“A mill?”
我还指着窗外补充:
“You said ‘run of the mill’.”
“你刚才不是说工厂在运转吗?”
旁边陪我看房的加拿大同事直接笑弯了腰。
他解释:“No, she just means it’s pretty ordinary.”
“不是,她只是说这套房很普通,没什么特别的。”
我这才反应过来。
run-of-the-mill根本不是“工厂正在运行”,而是“普通的、平平无奇的”。
比如同事说:
“It was a run-of-the-mill meeting.”
不是会议在磨坊里开,而是“就是个普通会议”。
最尴尬的是,中介最后还安慰我:
“But don’t worry, there’s definitely no mill nearby.”
“不过放心,附近确实没有工厂。”
现在每次看到租房广告写“unique”,我都忍不住想:它到底是真的特别,还是其实也很run-of-the-mill?
