刚到加拿大公司没多久,我参加部门晨会。

经理刚坐下就说:
“Right off the bat, we need to fix the login issue.”
“我们right off the bat就得把登录问题解决掉。”

我当时英语脑回路瞬间启动:
right=直接,bat=球棒。

我偷偷看了一眼会议室四周。

墙角没有球棒,桌子下面也没有。

我甚至开始怀疑:
加拿大公司开会前还有什么棒球传统?

同事接着问我:
“Jon, what do you think right off the bat?”
“Jon,你right off the bat怎么看?”

我彻底懵了。

我很认真地回:
“Sorry… which bat?”
“抱歉……哪根球棒?”

会议室安静了一秒。

旁边同事直接笑出声:
“No baseball bat! It just means immediately.”
“没有棒球棒!就是‘马上、立即’的意思。”

我这才反应过来。

原来经理第一句话其实就是:
“我们一开始就得先解决登录问题。”

后来他们还告诉我,这个说法确实和棒球有关。

球被球棒打出去的那一刻,事情马上就发生了,所以right off the bat慢慢就有了“立即、从一开始就”的意思。

最尴尬的是,下午经理又说:
“I knew right off the bat this would be a problem.”
“我一开始就知道这会是个问题。”

这次我没找球棒。

但旁边同事故意看着我说:
“No bat this time.”
“这次没有球棒哦。”

全办公室又笑了。

从那以后我看到right off the bat,脑子里还是会闪过一根棒球棒,但至少下一秒能自动翻译成“马上、从一开始就”。
