加拿大办公室内推,同事说要“pull a few strings”,我低头找了半天线

来加拿大工作没多久,公司内部突然放出一个我很想申请的职位。
午休时我跟同事Mike说:“I really want this job, but I don't know anyone in that department.”
“我很想申请,但那个部门一个人都不认识。”
Mike边喝咖啡边说:
“Talk to Sarah. She might be able to pull a few strings.”
“去找Sarah吧,她可能能pull几根线。”
我当时脑子里瞬间出现一个画面:
Sarah躲在HR办公室后面,像操纵木偶一样,偷偷拉着几根别人看不见的线。
我还认真问:
“Where are the strings? Like… behind the scenes?”
“那些线在哪?就是……藏在后面那种?”
Mike停了两秒:“What strings?”
我一脸认真:
“You said she could pull some strings.”
“不是你说她能拉几根线吗?”
隔壁两个同事直接笑喷。
Mike笑得咖啡差点洒出来:
“No actual strings! It means she knows people and might use her connections to help you.”
“没有真的线!就是说她认识人,也许能用关系帮你。”
我这才反应过来。
pull a few strings根本不是“偷偷拉几根没被发现的线”,而是利用自己的人脉、影响力,让事情更容易办成。
比如:
“I pulled a few strings and got you an interview.”
“我托了点关系,帮你争取到了面试。”
更尴尬的是,下午Sarah真的来找我:
“I heard you're looking for some strings?”
整个办公室又笑了一轮。
后来面试我是自己拿到的,但从那以后,只要有人说pull strings,我脑子里还是会出现Sarah躲在HR后面操纵木偶的画面。
