上周公司开项目演示会,我负责在会议室展示一个新系统。

投影仪开着,电脑连着大屏,客户也坐在对面。

演示到一半,老板看了看时间,说:

“If they don’t approve it today, we may have to pull the plug.”
“如果他们今天还不批准,我们可能就得 pull the plug 了。”

我一听:pull the plug?

拔插头?

我看了一眼桌子下面那一排电线,心想:这么突然?现在就关?

老板继续跟客户讲话,我觉得这种时候应该主动一点。

于是我弯下腰,找到插头。

啪。

拔了。

大屏瞬间黑了。

会议室安静了两秒。

老板转头看我:

“Jon… what are you doing?”
“Jon……你在干什么?”

我还很认真地回答:

“You said pull the plug.”
“你不是说拔插头吗?”

旁边同事直接笑出声。

老板也愣了两秒:

“I meant cancel the project, not unplug the TV!”
“我是说终止这个项目,不是让你把电视插头拔了!”

我当时只想钻到会议桌下面,顺便别再出来了。

更尴尬的是,客户马上说:

“Actually, we’re ready to approve it.”
“其实,我们已经准备批准了。”

所以项目不仅没被“拔插头”,还继续做了。

只有我,真的把插头拔了。

后来我才彻底记住,北美办公室里说 pull the plug,很多时候不是在讨论电器。

“We decided to pull the plug on the project.”
通常就是:我们决定叫停这个项目。

现在每次同事说 pull the plug,我都会先看他的脸,再看墙上的插座。
