加拿大办公室午休时,几个同事突然聊起周末计划。

Mike压低声音说:
“I’m going to pop the question tonight.”
“我今晚准备 pop the question。”

我一听,脑子自动翻译:
pop=突然抛出,question=问题。

懂了。

今晚他要在约会的时候,突然问女朋友一个重要问题。

我还特别认真地问:
“Is it a difficult question?”
“这个问题很难吗?”

桌上突然安静了两秒。

Mike愣了一下:
“Well… I hope she says yes.”
“嗯……我希望她回答 yes。”

我更确定了。

原来还是一道Yes or No的题。

于是我非常热心地说:
“Maybe give her some time to think.”
“那你最好给她一点时间想想。”

旁边的同事已经开始憋笑。

我又补了一句:
“Don’t make it too difficult.”
“别把问题出得太难。”

这下整桌直接笑翻。

Mike一脸迷惑:
“Difficult? I’m asking her to marry me!”
“难?我是要求婚啊!”

我当场卡住。

原来英语里的“pop the question”,根本不是“突然抛出一个问题”。

这里的the question,默认就是那个大问题:

“Will you marry me?”
“你愿意嫁给我吗?”

所以:
“He popped the question last night.”

通常不是说:
“他昨晚突然问了个问题。”

而是:
“他昨晚求婚了。”

第二天Mike回来,同事问:
“So? Did you pop the question?”

这次我终于听懂了。

但我还是条件反射地追问:
“Did she get the answer right?”

她……答对了吗?

全办公室又笑了一轮。
