在加拿大上班后,我发现最容易把人整懵的,往往不是长单词。

而是每个词都认识,连起来却完全不是那回事。

前阵子我想申请公司报销一笔培训费。

我觉得理由很充分,直接把收据发给经理,心想:这不两分钟搞定?

经理看了一眼说:

“You’ll need to submit the form first. You know, just play the game.”
“你得先交那个表。你懂的,play the game。”

我脑子当场卡住。

Play the game?

玩游戏?

我以为公司内部有什么新人必须参加的小游戏,甚至认真问:

“Which game? Is it on Teams?”
“哪个游戏?在 Teams 里面吗?”

经理愣了两秒:

“What game?”
“什么游戏?”

我指着电脑:“The game you just said.”

旁边同事直接笑出了声。

经理这才反应过来,赶紧解释:

“No, I mean follow the process. Fill out the form, get approval, then Finance can reimburse you.”
“不是,我是说按流程来。填表、审批,然后财务才能报销。”

我低头看了一眼自己刚打开的 Teams。

游戏没找到,社死倒是成功解锁了。

后来我才真正记住,play the game 在这种场景里,不是真的“玩游戏”。

它常常是“按规矩办事、照既定规则来”,有时候也带一点“想把事情办成,就得配合这套流程”的感觉。

比如:

“If you want to get promoted here, you have to play the game.”
“如果你想在这里升职,有些规则和做事方式你得懂。”

现在每次听到 play the game,我脑子里还是会先闪过那个问题:

“Is it on Teams?”
