加拿大办公室说“pave the way”,我以为项目还得先修条路……

刚到加拿大工作那阵,公司准备上线一套新系统。
会议上经理指着测试计划说:
“This pilot project will pave the way for the full rollout.”
“这个试点项目会 pave the way,让后面的全面上线更顺利。”
我听到 pave the way,脑子里直接翻译成:铺路。
偏偏那几天公司楼下真的在修路。
挖掘机、路障、施工牌天天堵在停车场门口。
我很认真地问:
“Do we have to wait until the road is finished?”
“那我们是不是得等下面那条路修完?”
会议室突然安静了两秒。
经理一脸困惑:
“What road?”
“什么路?”
我指了指窗外:
“The road downstairs. You said we need to pave the way first.”
“楼下那条啊,你不是说我们得先把路铺好吗?”
旁边同事直接笑到转过椅子。
经理也笑了:
“No, no. I mean this pilot will make the next step easier.”
“不是修路。我是说这个试点会给下一步创造条件。”
我这才反应过来。
pave the way虽然字面真的是“铺路”,但北美工作和生活里经常用来表示“为某件事创造条件、扫清障碍”。
比如:
“This internship could pave the way for a full-time job.”
“这段实习可能为以后拿到全职工作铺平道路。”
最尴尬的是,会议结束后同事拍了拍我:
“Don’t worry, Jon. No hard hat required.”
“放心,这个项目不用戴安全帽。”
从那以后我一听到 pave the way,脑子里还是会出现那台挖掘机。
