加拿大办公室里,同事说“passing the buck”,我脑子里直接跑出一只鹿……

在加拿大办公室开项目复盘会,经理问为什么客户的问题拖了两天还没解决。
同事Mike叹了口气说:
“Everyone keeps passing the buck.”
“大家一直在passing the buck。”
我一听愣住了。
Buck?
雄鹿?
我脑子里立刻出现一个离谱画面:
几个同事站成一排,把一只鹿从这个人手里递到那个人手里。
我甚至小声问旁边同事:
“Why are we talking about a deer?”
“为什么突然说到鹿了?”
旁边的Sarah先愣了两秒,然后差点笑出声。
她说:
“No, no. Passing the buck means passing responsibility to someone else.”
“不是啦,passing the buck就是把责任推给别人。”
这时候经理正好接着说:
“Sales blamed support, support blamed IT, and IT blamed the vendor.”
“销售怪客服,客服怪IT,IT又怪供应商。”
我瞬间懂了。
原来根本没有鹿。
整个会议室里真正被“传来传去”的,是责任。
更尴尬的是,经理下一句突然点到我:
“Jon, I don’t want us passing the buck. Can you own this issue?”
“Jon,我不希望大家继续互相推责任,这个问题你能负责到底吗?”
刚刚还在脑补鹿的我,立刻坐直:
“Yes. I’ll take ownership.”
“可以,我来负责到底。”
后来我才知道,pass the buck在北美职场里非常常见,就是“把责任推给别人”。
比如:
“Stop passing the buck.”
别再推卸责任了。
“He always passes the buck when something goes wrong.”
一出问题,他总把责任推给别人。
最狠的是,我现在每次听到passing the buck,脑子里还是会闪过那只被办公室同事传来传去的鹿……
