刚来加拿大工作那会儿,我最怕老板突然说一个看起来每个单词都认识、合起来却完全听不懂的词。

有次开完季度会议,经理看着我说:

“You really outperformed expectations this quarter.”
“你这个季度真的 outperform 了预期。”

我脑子里瞬间拆词:
out = 外面,
perform = 表现。

于是我第一反应竟然是:

“Outside? You mean I should present somewhere outside?”
“外面?你的意思是让我去外面做展示吗?”

经理愣了一下。

旁边同事直接笑了:

“No, he means you did better than expected.”
“不是,他是说你表现得比预期还好。”

我当场沉默了两秒。

原来 outperform 根本不是“在外面表现”。

它的意思是:
表现得比别人更好,或者超过某个标准。

比如:

“Our team outperformed the other departments.”
“我们团队的表现超过了其他部门。”

“The new laptop outperformed the old one.”
“这台新电脑性能比旧电脑更好。”

最尴尬的是,经理后来还补了一句:

“So… no need to go outside.”
“所以……不用真的出去。”

整个会议室又笑了一遍。

从那以后我算是彻底记住了:
outperform 里的 out,不是“出去”,而是“超过”。
