加拿大办公室里,同事说“out of left field”,我以为他在说棒球场……

周一早上开会,经理突然说公司可能要把一个项目提前三个月上线。
旁边同事Mike皱着眉说:
“That came out of left field.”
“这也太 out of left field 了。”
我一听,脑子里马上出现棒球场。
left field,不就是左外野吗?
我还很认真地问:
“Why left field? Was someone playing baseball?”
“为什么是左外野?刚才有人在打棒球吗?”
会议室突然安静了两秒。
Mike看着我:
“Baseball?”
我赶紧补充:
“You said it came from the left field.”
“你刚才不是说它从左外野过来的吗?”
坐我对面的同事没忍住笑了。
经理也笑着解释:
“No, I mean the announcement was completely unexpected.”
“不是,我的意思是这个消息完全出乎意料。”
我这才反应过来。
原来 out of left field 在北美日常英语里,经常不是在说棒球。
它表示:
“突然冒出来的”
“完全没预料到的”
“毫无预兆的”
比如老板突然宣布重组,可以说:
“That decision came out of left field.”
那个决定来得太突然了。
朋友突然告诉你他下个月结婚,也可以说:
“Wow, that’s out of left field.”
哇,这也太意外了。
最尴尬的是,会后Mike还拍了拍我的肩膀:
“Don’t worry. Your baseball question came out of left field too.”
“别担心,你刚才那个棒球问题也挺突然的。”
我当场笑到不知道该怎么接。
在加拿大生活久了才发现,最容易听懂每个单词,却完全听错整句话。
