加拿大Costco买电视,朋友说“on second thoughts”,我认真问:那第一个想法呢?

周末跟加拿大朋友去Costco买电视。
我们站在一台75寸电视前研究了半天,他突然说:
“Let’s get this one.”
“就买这台吧。”
我都准备去找工作人员了。
结果刚走两步,他又盯着价格牌说:
“On second thoughts, maybe we should get the 65-inch one.”
“转念一想,也许我们还是买65寸的。”
我当时脑子直接卡住。
on second thoughts?
“在第二个想法上”?
我很认真地问他:
“Wait, what was your first thought?”
“等等,那你的第一个想法是什么?”
他愣了一下:
“My first thought?”
“我的第一个想法?”
我还以为他没听懂,赶紧解释:
“You said ‘second thoughts’, so I thought there was a first thought.”
“你说‘第二个想法’,那应该还有第一个啊。”
旁边正在挑电视的一对老夫妻直接笑出了声。
朋友也笑疯了:
“No, it just means I changed my mind after thinking about it again.”
“不是啦,就是重新想了一下之后,我改主意了。”
我这才反应过来。
on second thoughts根本不是“第二个想法登场了”,而是“转念一想、重新考虑后”。
比如本来准备点汉堡:
“I’ll have the burger. On second thoughts, I’ll get the salad.”
“我要汉堡……转念一想,还是沙拉吧。”
后来我们真的买了65寸。
朋友推着购物车还问我:
“Any third thoughts?”
“还有第三个想法吗?”
这次我终于听懂了,但我怀疑他已经准备拿这个梗笑我一年了。
