加拿大暴雪天朋友说“out of the question”,我居然穿上外套准备走过去……

加拿大冬天有次朋友约我去超市。
外面零下二十多度,雪被风吹得横着飞,我看导航才1.5公里,就很自然地说:
“Can we just walk there?”
“我们直接走过去不就行了?”
朋友看了一眼窗外:
“Walking there is out of the question.”
“走过去 is out of the question。”
我当时脑子自动直译:
out of the question=“在问题之外”。
我甚至理解成:
“走路根本不算个问题。”
于是特别自信地回答:
“Exactly! It’s not a problem.”
“对啊!这根本不是问题。”
说完我就开始戴帽子、围围巾、穿鞋。
朋友站在门口看着我:
“Wait…where are you going?”
“等等……你去哪儿?”
我:“To the store. You said walking is not a problem.”
“去超市啊,你不是说走路没问题吗?”
他愣了两秒,直接笑出声:
“No! I said it’s OUT OF THE QUESTION.”
“I mean absolutely not!”
“不!我的意思是绝对不行!”
然后他把车钥匙晃了晃:
“We’re driving.”
“我们开车。”
我这才知道,out of the question 根本不是“这个问题之外”,而是“完全不可能、根本不用考虑”。
比如:
“Buying a new car right now is out of the question.”
现在买新车根本不可能。
最尴尬的是,那天我还已经全副武装站在门口了。
后来再听到 out of the question,我脑子里不是中文翻译,而是那场暴雪,还有朋友看着我穿鞋时震惊的脸。
