加拿大办公室同事说“now and then”，我追着问：then到底是哪一天？

午休的时候，我和几个加拿大同事在茶水间聊天。

大家聊到每天怎么上班，Sarah随口说：

“I work from home now and then.”
“我now and then会在家办公。”

我听到这句话，脑子立刻开始逐字翻译：

now＝现在。
then＝那时候。

所以她的意思是——“现在和那时候，我在家办公”？

我忍了几秒，还是没忍住：

“What do you mean by ‘then’? Last week?”
“你说的那个‘那时候’，是上周吗？”

Sarah愣了一下。

“What?”
“什么？”

我还认真帮她缩小范围：

“You said now and then. I understand ‘now’, but when is ‘then’?”
“你说现在和那时。现在我懂，但‘那时’到底是什么时候？”

旁边正在喝咖啡的同事直接笑呛了。

Sarah也反应过来：

“Oh! ‘Now and then’ just means occasionally.”
“哦！now and then就是‘偶尔’的意思。”

我：“So there is no ‘then’?”
“所以……根本没有那个‘那时候’？”

她笑着说：

“No specific ‘then’.”
“没有具体哪一天。”

那一刻我才发现，我刚刚居然试图给一个英语固定表达查日期。

后来再听到：

“I still eat instant noodles now and then.”
“I go to the gym now and then.”

我终于不会再问：“Then是星期几？”

now and then就是“偶尔、时不时”，和sometimes很接近。

有些英语最坑的地方，就是每个单词你都认识，连起来以后却完全不是你脑补的意思。
