刚来加拿大时,我在一家超市做兼职。

周六下午特别忙,矿泉水、鸡蛋、牛奶几乎刚摆上去就被拿空。

主管看着空货架说:
“We need to meet the demand before the evening rush.”
“晚高峰之前,我们得 meet the demand。”

我听见 meet,脑子里自动翻译成:见面。
Demand 是需求。

所以……“去见需求”?

我认真问:
“Where should I meet them?”
“我要去哪里见他们?”

主管愣了一下:
“Meet who?”
“见谁?”

我指了指门口:
“The people with the demand.”
“那些有需求的人啊。”

旁边正在补货的同事直接笑喷了。

主管憋着笑说:
“No, no. Meet the demand means we need enough products for customers.”
“不是去见谁,是说我们要准备足够的商品来满足顾客需求。”

我这才反应过来,meet 不一定是“见面”。

meet the demand = 满足需求、达到需求量。

比如公司里也经常听到:
“We hired more staff to meet the demand.”
“我们增加了员工来满足需求。”

最尴尬的是,主管后来每次看到货架快空了,都会故意问我:
“Jon, ready to go meet the demand?”

全组的人马上开始笑。

现在我看到 meet,已经不敢第一反应就想“见面”了。
