上周加拿大办公室给经理办生日惊喜。

有人负责蛋糕,有人关灯,我的任务只是把经理骗进会议室。

门一开,大家一起喊:
“Surprise!”
“生日惊喜!”

经理吓得手里的咖啡差点飞出去。

他笑着看了一圈,突然指着我问同事:
“So, is he the mastermind behind all this?”
“所以,他就是这一切背后的 mastermind?”

我一听 mastermind,脑子自动拆词:
master + mind。

“大师级头脑?”

我瞬间有点不好意思,赶紧谦虚:
“Oh, not really. I’m not that smart.”
“没有啦,我没那么聪明。”

整个会议室安静了一秒。

旁边同事直接笑出声:
“He means, did you plan the whole thing?”
“他的意思是,这一切是不是你策划的?”

我这才发现,mastermind 根本不是在夸我有个“高手的大脑”。

它通常指某件事背后的策划者、主谋。

比如:
“She masterminded the surprise party.”
“这场惊喜派对是她策划的。”

也可以用于坏事:
“The police arrested the mastermind behind the scam.”
“警方抓住了诈骗案的幕后主谋。”

更尴尬的是,经理听完我的解释,拍拍我肩膀说:
“Well, you may not be the mastermind, but you’re definitely the best actor.”
“好吧,你可能不是幕后策划者,但你绝对是最佳演员。”

因为我把他骗进会议室时,还一本正经地说:“打印机好像坏了。”

来加拿大以后我发现,最容易让人社死的英语,往往每个单词我都认识——你第一次看到 mastermind,会不会也先想到“大师的头脑”?
