加拿大街头采访,同事说“ask the man in the street”,我真跑去找路边男人了

公司准备给新产品做一次用户调查。
加拿大同事Mark看着问卷说:
“We need to know what the man in the street thinks.”
“我们得知道 man in the street 是怎么想的。”
我一听,立刻往窗外看。
楼下公交站正好站着一个穿夹克的大叔。
我指着他问:
“You mean that man in the street?”
“你是说街上那个男的吗?”
Mark愣了两秒:“What man?”
“哪个男的?”
我很认真地指窗外:
“That guy. He’s literally in the street.”
“那个啊,他真的就在街上。”
旁边同事直接笑出了声。
更社死的是,我还拿着问卷下楼了。
我追上大叔:
“Excuse me, can I ask you a few questions?”
“不好意思,可以问您几个问题吗?”
大叔一脸警惕:“About what?”
我说:
“My coworker said we need the opinion of the man in the street.”
“我同事说,我们需要街上那个男人的意见。”
大叔看了看自己,又看了看街道:
“Well… I guess that’s me.”
回办公室后,Mark笑到扶桌。
他才告诉我,man in the street 不是特指“街上的某个男人”,而是普通大众、一般人。
也就是:
“What would the man in the street think?”
更接近“普通人会怎么看?”
最绝的是,大叔后来真的把问卷填完了。
Mark还说:
“Technically, you did ask a man in the street.”
那一刻我突然觉得,我虽然理解错了英语,任务居然完成得异常精准。
