加拿大订机票时听到“mainland”,我还以为是在问哪块地最重要

前阵子我在加拿大订去温哥华岛的行程。
同事听完后问我:
“Are you staying on the island, or going back to the mainland?”
“你是一直待在岛上,还是会回 mainland?”
我当时脑子里直接拆词:
main = 主要的,
land = 土地。
所以我认真反问:
“What do you mean by the main land? Downtown Vancouver?”
“你说的‘主要那块地’是温哥华市中心吗?”
同事愣了一下。
然后他指了指地图:
“No, I mean the mainland. Vancouver is on the mainland.”
“不是,我说的是大陆、本土。温哥华就在 mainland 上。”
我还没反应过来:
“So Vancouver Island is… not the main land?”
“所以温哥华岛不是‘主要的土地’?”
旁边另一个同事直接笑了:
“It’s not about which land is more important.”
“不是在给土地排重要程度啦。”
我这才明白,mainland 不能按 main + land 生硬拆。
在北美生活里,这个词其实很常见。
尤其是坐 ferry、订酒店、问路线的时候,经常会听到:
“the mainland”
“大陆、本土,与岛屿相对的陆地区域。”
比如从 Vancouver Island 回 Vancouver,
就可以说:
“We’re heading back to the mainland tomorrow.”
“我们明天回大陆那边。”
最尴尬的是,后来我坐渡轮时,工作人员又问:
“Are you returning to the mainland today?”
这次我终于秒懂了。
我很镇定地说:
“Yes.”
结果朋友在旁边补了一句:
“Good. No more land ranking.”
我:……
