加拿大同事说他最近“live high on the hog”,我脑子里直接出现了一头猪……

公司午休时,同事Mark刚从墨西哥度假回来。
大家围着他问酒店怎么样,他一边展示照片一边笑:
“We really lived high on the hog for a week.”
“我们那一周真的live high on the hog。”
我听完愣了两秒。
high,高高的。
hog,猪。
我脑子里瞬间出现一个画面:
Mark穿着花衬衫,骑在一头巨大肥猪背上,在墨西哥海滩一路狂奔。
我忍不住问:
“You rode pigs there?”
“你们在那里骑猪了?”
整个午餐桌突然安静。
Mark:“What?”
“什么?”
我还认真解释:
“You said you lived high on the hog.”
“你不是说你们高高地生活在猪上吗?”
旁边同事直接笑到差点把咖啡喷出来。
Mark终于反应过来:
“No, no. It means we spent a lot and lived really well.”
“不不,我是说我们花了很多钱,吃得好住得好,过得很奢侈。”
原来live high on the hog不是“骑在猪上生活”。
它的意思更接近:
日子过得很阔气、很奢侈,吃好的、住好的、花钱不手软。
比如朋友刚升职,突然天天高级餐厅、住豪华酒店,就可以说:
“He’s living high on the hog these days.”
“他最近日子过得相当滋润。”
最尴尬的是,Mark后来居然补了一句:
“But riding a pig sounds cheaper.”
“不过骑猪听起来应该便宜多了。”
全桌又笑了。
现在我每次看到high和hog放在一起,脑子里还是会自动出现一个人骑猪度假的画面。
