周六早上,我答应帮加拿大室友Sarah搬家。

刚到公寓,她一脸崩溃地说:“The movers cancelled. Please don’t leave me in the lurch.”
搬家公司取消了,你可千万别leave me in the lurch。

我脑子里直接翻译成:别把我留在困境里。

再看看楼道里十几个纸箱、床垫和一张卡在门口的沙发,我瞬间懂了:
她这是怕自己“被困”在这里吧?

我立刻拍胸脯:“Don’t worry. I’ll get you out of here.”
放心,我一定把你从这里弄出去。

于是我吭哧吭哧把沙发搬出门,又帮她把几个箱子抬到楼下。

然后我擦擦汗说:
“Okay, you’re out now. I have brunch plans, so I’ll go.”

Sarah整个人愣住:“Wait… what?”

我指着楼外:“You’re not stuck anymore.”
你已经没被困住了呀。

她憋了两秒,直接笑了:
“I meant don’t abandon me when I need help!”

我这才反应过来。

leave someone in the lurch 不是单纯“把某人留在困境里”,而是在人家最需要你的时候突然撒手不管、放鸽子、把烂摊子留给对方。

比如同事做到一半辞职、朋友答应帮搬家却临时跑了,都可以说:
“He left me in the lurch.”

最尴尬的是,我为了证明自己不会“leave her in the lurch”,差点真的在搬到一半时leave her in the lurch……
