周末和加拿大同事去商场吃饭。

吃到一半,我想去洗手间,但第一次来这家商场,完全不知道在哪。

同事Mark说:“I think it’s upstairs. You know this place better than I do. Lead the way.”
“我觉得在楼上。你比我熟,lead the way。”

我一听“lead”,脑子里立刻跳出“领导”。

Lead the way?
“领导这条路”?

我心想:去个洗手间而已,怎么突然开始分配领导岗位了?

我还很认真地问:
“You want me to be the leader?”
“你是想让我当领导吗?”

Mark愣了两秒,然后笑出声:
“No, no. Just lead the way.”
“不是不是,就是你带路。”

我为了证明自己真的能“带路”,自信满满走在最前面。

结果带着Mark绕过美食广场,穿过两家服装店,最后走到了商场停车场。

Mark站在门口看着我:
“So… are we driving to the washroom?”
“所以……我们是准备开车去洗手间吗?”

我当场脸都热了。

后来才彻底记住,lead the way 在这种场景里,就是“你走前面带路、你来引路”。

比如朋友知道餐厅在哪,可以说:
“You know where it is. Lead the way.”
“你知道在哪,你带路吧。”

更有意思的是,它不一定真的是走路。

开会时如果有人说:
“Sarah will lead the way on this project.”
意思也可以是Sarah会带头推进这个项目。

现在我再听到“lead the way”,脑子里已经不是“领导一条路”了,而是那个被我一路带到停车场的加拿大同事。
