周一早上开项目会,经理突然看着我说:

“Jon, you’ve worked with this system before. Why don’t you lead the dance on this one?”
“Jon,你之前做过这个系统,这次你来lead the dance吧。”

我当场愣了两秒。

lead是领导,dance是跳舞。
“领导大家跳舞”?

我脑子里瞬间出现了公司Christmas Party的画面:十几个同事站成一排,我在最前面挥手,“Five, six, seven, eight!”

更尴尬的是,我还认真回答:

“I’m not really good at dancing.”
“我其实不太会跳舞。”

会议室突然安静。

旁边同事看了看我,又看了看经理。
经理忍着笑问:

“Dancing?”
“跳舞?”

我说:“Yeah… you said I should lead the dance.”
“对啊……你不是说让我带大家跳吗?”

这下全桌都笑了。

经理赶紧解释:
“No, I mean take the lead. Coordinate everyone and get things moving.”
“不是跳舞,我是说你来带头,协调大家,把这个事情推进起来。”

我这才反应过来。

原来lead the dance在这种语境里,dance根本不是让你真的跳。
它更接近“带头、主导局面、掌握节奏”。

比如一个项目卡住了,有人需要站出来组织大家推进,就可能说:
“She’s leading the dance on the rollout.”
“这次上线主要由她牵头推进。”

最搞笑的是会议结束后,同事路过我工位,还故意扭了两下:

“Hey Jon, show us your dance moves!”
“Jon,来,展示一下你的领舞水平!”

我现在一听lead the dance,脑子里还是会先出现公司年会。
