加拿大办公室里,同事说他要“laugh all the way to the bank”,我真以为他要一路笑着去银行……

周五下午,办公室大家都在聊一个同事刚做完的副业项目。
客户临时加预算,他几乎没多做什么,结果又多拿了一笔钱。
旁边的Mike笑着说:
“He’ll be laughing all the way to the bank.”
“他会一路笑到银行的。”
我听完愣了两秒。
脑子里立刻出现一个画面:
他抱着支票,从办公室一路哈哈哈哈笑到银行门口。
我还特别认真地问:
“Why does he have to go to the bank? Can’t he just deposit it online?”
“他为什么一定要去银行?不能手机存进去吗?”
空气突然安静了一秒。
Mike看着我:
“What?”
“什么?”
我又解释了一遍:
“You said he’ll laugh all the way to the bank.”
“你不是说他会一路笑着去银行吗?”
旁边几个同事直接笑出声。
Mike赶紧摆手:
“No, no. It means he made a lot of money very easily.”
“不是不是,意思是他很轻松地赚了一大笔钱。”
我这才反应过来。
原来laugh all the way to the bank根本不强调真的“去银行”。
它通常是在说:
某人因为某件事赚了很多钱,而且赚得还挺轻松,甚至有点“别人还在忙,他已经赚钱赚开心了”的感觉。
比如朋友低价买的房子突然涨了很多:
“He sold it for twice the price. He’s laughing all the way to the bank.”
“他翻倍卖掉了,现在可是轻松赚大了。”
最尴尬的是,下班时Mike路过我桌边,还故意问:
“So… are you walking to the bank today?”
“所以……你今天要走去银行吗?”
我:“Please stop.”
“求你别说了。”
现在每次听到bank,我脑子里还是会自动出现一个人抱着支票边走边狂笑的画面。
