加拿大电脑店店员说“last word”,我以为这款电脑要停产了

周末去加拿大一家电脑店换笔记本。
店员给我演示完最新款,很认真地说:
“This is pretty much the last word in lightweight laptops.”
“这基本算是轻薄本里的 last word。”
我心里咯噔一下。
Last word?
“最后的话”?
我赶紧问:
“Wait… is this model being discontinued?”
“等等……这款要停产了吗?”
店员愣了两秒:
“No… why?”
“没有啊……为什么这么问?”
我指着电脑:
“You said it’s the last word.”
“你刚才说这是‘最后的话’啊。”
旁边正在挑鼠标的人直接笑出了声。
店员也笑了:
“Oh! I mean it’s one of the newest and most advanced.”
“我是说,它算现在最新、最先进的那一类。”
我尴尬地点头,假装自己刚才只是谨慎消费。
结果真正的暴击还在后面。
我纠结到底买16GB还是32GB,同行朋友说:
“It’s your money. You have the last word.”
“你的钱,你有最后决定权。”
我脱口而出:
“Why does everyone have a last word today?”
“今天怎么人人都有‘最后的话’?”
这次连店员都笑弯了。
后来我才彻底记住:
the last word可以是“最终决定权”,比如have the last word;
也可以说某样东西是the last word in...,表示它特别新、特别先进。
有些英语真的不能一个词一个词往中文里搬,不然买个电脑都能听出一种“临终遗言”的气氛。
