加拿大办公室午休,大家边吃饭边聊最近追的一部美剧。

同事Mike突然摇头:
“This show really jumped the shark last season.”
“这部剧上一季真的jumped the shark了。”

我听到“shark”,脑子里立刻出现一个画面:
男主站在游艇上,一个助跑,直接从鲨鱼头顶飞过去。

我还认真问:
“Wait, which episode? I don’t remember a shark.”
“等等,哪一集?我怎么不记得有鲨鱼?”

桌上瞬间安静了两秒。

Mike一脸迷惑:
“There wasn’t a shark.”
“没有鲨鱼啊。”

我更迷惑了:
“But you just said he jumped the shark.”
“可是你刚才明明说他跳过鲨鱼了。”

旁边同事直接笑喷:
“No, no. The show jumped the shark.”
“不是某个人跳鲨鱼,是这部剧jumped the shark。”

我当时还没反应过来:
“So… the whole show jumped over a shark?”
“所以……整部剧一起跳过去了?”

这下全桌都笑了。

后来他们才告诉我,jump the shark并不是真的“跳过鲨鱼”。

它通常用来形容一部电视剧、电影系列或者节目,为了继续吸引观众,开始加入越来越离谱的剧情,结果反而让人觉得它已经过了巅峰,开始走下坡路了。

Mike指着那部剧说:
“The first three seasons were great, but after that, it jumped the shark.”
“前三季都很好,但从那以后就开始不行了。”

我终于懂了。

难怪北美同事聊剧时,经常不会直接说“This show is bad now.”

他们可能会更形象地来一句:
“It jumped the shark.”

现在我每次看到一部剧突然失忆、复活、失散双胞胎全部一起上场,脑子里都会自动出现一条鲨鱼。
