刚到加拿大公司那阵子,主管让我跟着老员工 Mike 熟悉内部系统。

他指了指 Mike:
“He knows all the ins and outs of this system.”
“这个系统的 ins and outs 他全都知道。”

我脑子里立刻翻译成:里面和外面。

我还挺认真,心想这个系统难道还分“内部”和“外部”两个入口?

Mike 站起来说:
“Come with me. I’ll show you the ins and outs.”
“跟我来,我带你看看。”

结果他刚往会议室外走,我就彻底理解歪了。

走到公司后门时,我指着门问:
“So this is one of the outs?”
“所以这里算一个 out?”

Mike 停住了。

后面两个同事也停住了。

他看看门,又看看我:
“Sorry… what?”

我还认真补了一句:
“Where are the ins?”
“那 ins 在哪里?”

旁边同事直接笑出声:
“He means the details, not the doors!”
“他说的是细节,不是门!”

那一瞬间我才知道,ins and outs 根本不是“里面和外面”。

它说的是一件事完整的来龙去脉、具体细节、门门道道。

比如:
“She knows the ins and outs of the immigration process.”
她很清楚移民流程里的各种细节。

“The job looks easy, but you need to learn the ins and outs.”
这工作看着简单,但里面的门道得慢慢学。

最尴尬的是,后来 Mike 真带我去培训系统。

走到门口时,他故意帮我拉开门:
“Here’s an out.”

全办公室又笑了。

现在只要听到 ins and outs,我脑子里还是会先闪过加拿大办公室那扇后门。
