加拿大机场看到“industrial action”,我还以为附近要办工业展……

上个月从加拿大出差,早上刚到机场,手机就弹出航空公司的提醒:
“Flights may be affected by industrial action.”
“航班可能受到 industrial action 影响。”
我盯着这句话看了两秒。
industrial=工业。
action=活动。
工业活动?
我脑子里瞬间出现了一幅画面:机场附近是不是在搞什么大型工业展?卡车、吊车、工厂设备全部开出来那种。
于是我还很认真地问同事:
“Is there some kind of industrial event near the airport?”
“机场附近是不是有什么工业活动?”
同事愣了一下:“Industrial event?”
我解释:“Yeah, the email says industrial action.”
“对啊,邮件里写着 industrial action。”
他突然笑了:
“Oh! That means workers may be going on strike.”
“哦!那是说员工可能要罢工。”
我:“……Strike?”
刚才脑子里的吊车、流水线、工业博览会,瞬间全部消失。
结果到了登机口,屏幕真的开始疯狂跳 Delay。
旁边旅客还在说:
“The union is taking industrial action.”
“工会正在采取劳工行动。”
这时我才彻底反应过来。
industrial action 不是“工业活动”,而是因为劳资纠纷采取的集体行动,常见的就是罢工、拒绝加班、按章工作等。
在加拿大和美国,日常新闻里更常看到 strike、labour action 或 job action,但旅行通知、国际新闻里碰到 industrial action,也千万别往“工业”上脑补。
学英语最怕的不是单词不认识。
