加拿大公交站听到“industrial action”,我还以为附近工厂要搞活动……

刚来加拿大那年,我每天坐公交去上课。
有天早上,我站在公交站刷手机,看到交通公司的通知:
“Some routes may be affected by industrial action tomorrow.”
“明天部分线路可能会受到 industrial action 影响。”
我盯着 industrial action 看了几秒。
industrial 是“工业的”,action 是“活动”。
我脑子里立刻翻译成:工业活动。
我甚至开始脑补,附近是不是有工厂开放日、机器展览,或者大型施工活动。
第二天室友准备出门,我还认真提醒他:
“There may be some industrial activities downtown today.”
“今天市中心可能有一些工业活动。”
他一脸迷惑:
“Industrial activities?”
“工业活动?”
我把公交通知递给他。
他看完突然笑了:
“Oh, you mean industrial action.”
“哦,你说的是 industrial action。”
“Yes. Maybe some factories are doing something?”
“对啊,是不是有工厂在搞什么活动?”
他憋着笑说:
“No. The bus drivers may go on strike.”
“不是,可能是公交司机要罢工。”
我当场愣住。
“Strike? Where did the factory go?”
“罢工?那工厂去哪了?”
他直接笑出声。
后来我才知道,industrial action 在新闻、公交通知和职场语境里,经常指员工为了工资、工作条件等采取的劳工行动。
比如 strike 罢工、work-to-rule 按章工作等,都可能算 industrial action。
最尴尬的是,当天我还真傻乎乎在公交站等了二十多分钟。
旁边一个加拿大大叔看我一直张望,好心提醒:
“You know there’s industrial action today, right?”
“你知道今天有劳工行动吧?”
我下意识回了一句:
“Yeah, but I haven’t seen any industry.”
“知道啊,可我还没看到什么工业活动。”
大叔沉默了两秒。
然后指了指空荡荡的马路:
“That’s why there’s no bus.”
“所以才没有公交车啊。”
那一刻我才真正记住:
industrial action 不是“工业活动”,而是“罢工、劳工抗议行动”。
