加拿大办公室:邮件说有“industrial action”,我还问工厂是不是在搞生产活动……

刚来加拿大工作那阵,我有次在办公室看到供应商发来一封通知。
里面有一句:
“Deliveries may be delayed due to industrial action.”
“由于 industrial action,送货可能会延迟。”
我一看 industrial,脑子自动翻译成“工业”。
action 又是“活动”。
那不就是——工业活动?
我还很认真地跟同事说:
“Are they doing some kind of industrial project?”
“他们是不是在搞什么工业项目?”
同事停了一下:
“Industrial project?”
“工业项目?”
我继续分析:
“Maybe factory maintenance? Or some construction?”
“是不是工厂检修?或者在施工?”
他表情越来越奇怪。
最后问我:
“You know ‘industrial action’ means workers are taking action, right?”
“你知道 industrial action 是员工在采取劳工行动吧?”
我还没反应过来:
“What kind of action?”
“什么行动?”
他说:
“Like a strike.”
“比如罢工。”
我当场安静了两秒。
所以邮件真正的意思根本不是:
“因为最近有工业生产活动,所以送货延迟。”
而是:
“因为罢工、停工或其他劳工抗议行动,送货可能延迟。”
后来我才发现,industrial action 经常出现在比较正式的新闻、公司通知或交通公告里。
它通常指员工为了工资、合同、工作条件等问题采取集体行动,比如 strike(罢工)、work stoppage(停工)之类。
最尴尬的是,我那个同事最后笑着问:
“So… what did you think the workers were doing?”
“所以……你刚才以为那些工人在干什么?”
我说:
“Industrial things.”
“工业的事情。”
说完我自己都笑了。
有些英语单词每个都认识,放在一起反而最容易翻车。
你们第一次看到 industrial action,会想到“罢工”,还是也会跟我一样先脑补一个热火朝天的工厂?
