加拿大办公室说“in the light of”，我抬头看了一眼会议室的灯……

刚到加拿大工作那会儿，有次周五下午大家开会，讨论下周的客户演示。

经理看了一眼天气预报，说：
“In the light of the storm warning, let’s move Monday’s meeting online.”
“鉴于暴风雪预警，我们把周一的会议改成线上吧。”

我只听见了“in the light of”。

脑子瞬间翻译成：
“在……的光下面。”

我抬头看了看会议室顶灯，又看了看窗外。

然后特别认真地问：
“Which light? The light in this room?”
“哪个灯？是这个会议室里的灯吗？”

会议室突然安静了两秒。

同事Mike顺着我的视线也抬头看灯，憋着笑问：
“What light?”
“什么灯？”

我还认真解释：
“You said ‘in the light of the storm warning.’”
“你刚才不是说‘在暴风雪预警的光下面’吗？”

这次全桌都笑了。

经理笑着摆手：
“No, no. ‘In the light of’ means ‘considering’ or ‘because of what we now know.’”
“不不，这里的 in the light of 是‘鉴于、考虑到’的意思。”

我当场脸有点热。

原来他说的其实就是：

“In the light of the storm warning...”
≈ “Considering the storm warning...”
≈ “鉴于暴风雪预警……”

最尴尬的是，十分钟后会议结束，Mike关灯时还特意问我：

“Are we still making decisions in the light of this light?”
“我们现在还要在这盏灯的‘光下’做决定吗？”

全办公室又笑了一轮。

后来我才发现，这个表达在公司邮件、新闻和正式讨论里特别常见。

比如：
“In the light of recent changes, we need to review the plan.”
“鉴于最近的变化，我们需要重新审视这个计划。”

现在每次看到 in the light of，我还是会先想到那盏会议室顶灯。
