加拿大办公室开会时,同事说“in the light of”,我真的去找灯了……

周一下午,公司临时开会讨论项目延期。
经理看着大家说:
“In the light of the new budget cuts, we may need to delay the launch.”
“鉴于新的预算削减,我们可能得推迟上线。”
我当时只听懂了:
in the light of = 在……的光下。
然后脑子自动翻译成:
“在新的预算削减的光下?”
我抬头看了一眼会议室的灯。
还认真问了一句:
“Sorry, do you mean the lighting in this room?”
“不好意思,你是说这个会议室的灯光吗?”
全桌安静了两秒。
坐我旁边的加拿大同事扭头看了看天花板:
“The lighting?”
“灯光?”
我还指了指头顶:
“Yeah… you said ‘in the light of’.”
“对啊……你刚才不是说‘在……的光下’吗?”
这时经理突然笑了。
“No, no. It means ‘considering’ or ‘because of this new information’.”
“不是不是,它的意思是‘考虑到’或者‘鉴于这个新情况’。”
我这才反应过来。
原来他说的是:
“In the light of the budget cuts…”
= 鉴于预算削减……
根本没有任何一盏灯参与这场会议。
最尴尬的是,散会的时候旁边同事还拍了拍我肩膀:
“In the light of what happened today, maybe we should buy you a flashlight.”
“鉴于今天发生的事,我们可能该给你买个手电筒。”
我直接笑到说不出话。
后来我才发现,这个表达在北美办公室真的很常见:
“In the light of recent changes…”
鉴于最近的变化……
“In the light of new information…”
考虑到新的信息……
“In the light of what happened…”
鉴于发生的事情……
中国人看到light,很容易先想到“光”。
但这里的light更接近“情况、信息、认知背景”。
现在我每次看到in the light of,脑子里还是会先闪过那盏会议室顶灯。
