加拿大办公室同事说自己“in the doghouse”,我认真问:狗窝有暖气吗?

加拿大办公室午休时,同事Mark一脸生无可恋地坐在茶水间。
另一个同事问他:
“You okay?”
“你还好吧?”
Mark叹了口气:
“I forgot our anniversary. I’m in the doghouse now.”
“我忘了结婚纪念日,现在in the doghouse了。”
我听完脑子里立刻出现一幅画面:
零下二十几度的加拿大晚上,Mark抱着被子,旁边一只金毛,俩人一起蹲在后院狗窝里。
我没忍住,很认真地问:
“Wait… your doghouse is heated, right?”
“等等……你家狗窝有暖气吧?”
整个茶水间突然安静了两秒。
Mark看着我:
“What?”
“什么?”
我还怕他没听懂,继续补刀:
“It’s freezing outside. You can’t actually sleep there.”
“外面这么冷,你真不能睡狗窝啊。”
旁边同事直接笑到趴桌上。
Mark终于反应过来:
“No, no! I’m not actually sleeping with the dog!”
“不不不!我没有真的跟狗一起睡!”
原来in the doghouse根本不是“人在狗窝里”。
它说的是:你把某人惹生气了,现在正在失宠、挨冷眼、日子不好过。
尤其情侣、夫妻之间特别常见。
比如:
“I bought hockey tickets on our anniversary. Now I’m in the doghouse.”
“我结婚纪念日那天买了冰球票,现在老婆正生我气呢。”
最尴尬的是,下班前Mark经过我桌边,还特意说:
“Don’t worry. The dog gets the doghouse. I get the couch.”
“放心,狗睡狗窝,我睡沙发。”
我当场又笑了。
现在我算记住了:
在加拿大,同事说自己“in the doghouse”,先别急着问狗窝有没有暖气。
不过我挺好奇,你们第一次听到in the doghouse,脑子里真的不会出现一间狗窝吗?
