加拿大室友说他穿着“birthday suit”,我还问:要不要打领带?

刚来加拿大留学那阵,我和几个同学合租。
周末室友准备去朋友家参加生日聚会,我随口问:
“What are you wearing tonight?”
“你今晚穿什么?”
他一边找钥匙一边说:
“Probably my birthday suit.”
“可能就穿我的 birthday suit。”
我脑子里立刻出现了一套生日礼服。
西装、衬衫、领结,甚至可能还有那种很夸张的派对帽。
我特别认真地问:
“Is a birthday suit like a special suit for birthday parties?”
“birthday suit 是生日聚会专门穿的西装吗?”
室友愣了两秒。
然后旁边正在喝咖啡的加拿大女生直接笑喷了。
她说:
“No. Birthday suit means naked.”
“不是,birthday suit 就是全裸。”
我:“……啊?”
室友赶紧解释:
“I’m joking. I’m obviously not going to the party in my birthday suit.”
“我开玩笑的,我当然不会光着去参加聚会。”
我这才反应过来。
所谓 birthday suit,根本不是什么“生日礼服”。
意思其实是“什么都没穿”,因为人出生的时候,本来就是光着的。
更尴尬的是,我刚才居然还一本正经追问:
“Do you wear a tie with it?”
“那要配领带吗?”
客厅瞬间又笑成一片。
后来我发现,这种表达在北美聊天里偶尔真的会碰到,尤其是开玩笑的时候:
“The kid ran around the house in his birthday suit.”
“那个小孩光着身子在家里跑来跑去。”
现在每次看到 birthday suit,我脑子里还是会先闪过一套西装,然后马上提醒自己:不对,这套“衣服”其实什么都没有。
如果你第一次听到 in your birthday suit,会不会也以为是“穿着生日礼服”?
