加拿大办公室同事说“in no way”,我还在认真帮他换方案……

在加拿大办公室开会时,我负责一个系统小改动。
同事Mike听完方案,皱着眉说:
“In no way are we doing that.”
“我们绝不会这么做。”
我当时脑子自动翻译成:
“不能用这种方式做。”
于是我很认真地点头:
“Okay, no problem. We can do it another way.”
“好的没问题,那我们换一种方式。”
然后我开始现场改方案。
我说:
“What if we move this button here?”
“那把按钮移到这里呢?”
Mike摇头:
“No, that’s not what I mean.”
“不,我不是这个意思。”
我还没反应过来,又问:
“So… another way?”
“所以……换个方法?”
旁边同事忍不住笑了:
“He means no. Like, absolutely no.”
“他的意思就是不行,完全没门。”
我当场愣住。
原来我一直把in no way拆成
“not in this way”
“不要用这种方式”。
但英语里in no way语气其实很重,
意思更接近“决不”“绝对不可能”“没门”。
比如:
“In no way am I paying $200 for delivery.”
“我绝不可能花200块送货费。”
“In no way can we finish this by Friday.”
“我们绝不可能周五前做完。”
最好笑的是,会议结束后Mike还拍了拍我肩膀:
“I admire your persistence, though.”
“不过我挺佩服你的坚持。”
我只能尴尬地回:
“Thanks… I thought we were still discussing options.”
“谢谢……我还以为我们一直在讨论替代方案。”
现在想想,中式英语最危险的地方,
不是完全听不懂,而是你觉得自己已经听懂了。
你们第一次听到in no way,会不会也理解成“不要用这种方式”?
