加拿大宠物诊所里,同事说“horse doctor”,我还真以为是专门给马看病的……

周末朋友带狗去加拿大一家宠物诊所,我顺便陪着。
候诊时,朋友看着墙上的医生介绍,小声说:
“He used to be a horse doctor.”
“他以前是个 horse doctor。”
我一听,脑子里立刻出现一幅画面:
一个医生站在农场里,旁边排着三匹马,脖子上还挂着听诊器。
我很认真地问:
“So he only treated horses before?”
“所以他以前只给马看病?”
朋友愣了一下:
“Not exactly. He was a vet.”
“也不完全是,他以前是兽医。”
我还没反应过来,前台正好听见,笑着补了一句:
“He worked mostly with horses, but ‘horse doctor’ can sound a little old-fashioned.”
“他主要给马看病,不过 horse doctor 这个说法听起来有点老派。”
我这才明白,horse doctor 确实可以指给马治病的兽医,并不是一个神秘的“马科专科医生”。
更尴尬的是,朋友又说:
“And sometimes people jokingly call a bad doctor a horse doctor.”
“而且有时候,人们还会开玩笑把庸医叫 horse doctor。”
我瞬间闭嘴。
因为刚才我还差点准备问:
“那人看病能找他吗?”
原来很多英语最容易记住的瞬间,不是在单词书里,而是在你认真误会以后,全场突然安静的那两秒。
如果你在加拿大听到别人说 horse doctor,你第一反应会是兽医,还是也会跟我一样,脑补出一间专门给马挂号的诊所?
