周六早上,我和几个加拿大朋友约好去徒步。

大家在停车场背好包、装好水,我还在研究地图。

朋友Mike看了看时间:

“We should hit the trail before it gets too hot.”
“我们最好趁还没太热赶紧hit the trail。”

我听到hit,第一反应就是“打、撞”。

再看trail——小路。

脑子瞬间翻译成:
“我们应该先撞一下这条小路?”

虽然觉得很奇怪,但加拿大人户外活动仪式感多,我也不敢问。

正好手里拿着登山杖。

于是我走到入口处,举起登山杖,对着泥土地面——

咚!咚!

还认真敲了两下。

旁边三个人全停下来了。

Mike一脸震惊:

“What are you doing?”
“你在干什么?”

我指着地面:

“You said hit the trail.”
“不是你说要hit the trail吗?”

空气安静了两秒。

然后所有人笑疯了。

Mike笑到背包都快掉下来:

“No! ‘Hit the trail’ means let’s get going!”
“不是!hit the trail就是出发、上路!”

我这才反应过来。

这里的hit根本不是让你真的去“打”trail。

比如徒步前别人说:

“Let’s hit the trail.”
就是“走吧,出发吧。”

旅行时也可能听到:

“We need to hit the trail early tomorrow.”
“我们明天得早点上路。”

最尴尬的是,徒步结束回停车场时,Mike还故意把登山杖递给我:

“Want to hit the trail one more time?”

全车又笑了。

从那以后,我看到hit the trail,脑子里先出现的不是“出发”,而是自己站在加拿大森林入口,拿登山杖咚咚敲地的样子。
